Bolivia is currently experiencing one of its worst economic crises in decades. Skyrocketing inflation, fuel and U.S. dollar shortages, recurring road blockades, and climate-related disruptions to food production have driven the cost of living to unsustainable levels. Prices of basic staples like rice, bread, and chicken have doubled this year, disproportionately harming low-income families who depend on daily income to survive. Women and girls, especially those already living in vulnerable situations, face not only poverty but also an increased risk of violence, exploitation, and exclusion.
At Centro Colibrí, we believe that empowering women is one of the most powerful ways to break cycles of poverty and build resilient communities. Through close collaboration with local organizations, we are able to deliver practical training workshops, emotional support, and violence-prevention programs that help women in Montero develop skills, discover their talents, and create income-generating opportunities. These programs not only support women’s personal and economic growth but also protect children by strengthening families and reducing household stress.
Research shows that empowering women is among the most effective drivers of sustainable development and community well-being. According to UN Women, “When more women work, economies grow. Increasing women’s participation in the labor force can boost economic growth significantly” (UN Women, Progress of the World’s Women, 2019). Similarly, the World Bank highlights that “gender equality is smart economics,” as investing in women’s skills and education leads to higher productivity and improved outcomes for the next generation (World Bank, World Development Report: Gender Equality and Development, 2012).
When a woman gains access to education, support, and opportunities, she not only transforms her own life, she uplifts her family and her entire community. Empowering women in times of crisis is planting the seeds of hope, resilience, and long-term change.
Thanks to the joint efforts of Centro Colibrí and our local partners, this work is possible, and it is changing lives.
Now more than ever, we need your support to continue and expand these life-changing programs. Together, we can help women and girls in Montero build safer, stronger, and brighter futures.
